Help Your Child Learn To Read

By helping your child to read well at an early age, you open the doors to all types of learning. Children's brains are most receptive at young ages, so you can give them a huge head-start by teaching them to read early on. Unfortunately, many children learn to believe that reading is boring. To prevent this from happening, you need to make reading a fun experience for them.

When your child is learning to read, it's important to find books they enjoy. Look for books that are bright and colorful and have lots of pictures. Books containing just text will do little to stimulate a child's imagination.

To find subjects that your child enjoys reading, introduce them to
many different books about a variety of topics, e.g. fairy stories, magic, sports, cars, superheroes, animals etc. This will help you find out what your child is really interested in; you may even discover their passion.

When your child responds well to a certain subject, extend that experience. For example, if your child enjoys reading a book about animals, take them to visit a farm.

Finding enjoyable books is a key priority, but remember to keep in mind that your child will learn by example. So, make books a part of your everyday life, and allow your child to see that you read regularly. Share your reading with your child - let them know that what you are reading is a catalogue or a cookbook etc.

It's much better if your child does their reading at a time of day when they are bright and alert, rather than last thing before bed-time when they are tired and drowsy. Reading must feel like a positive experience, so allow your child to read at times when they are full of energy.

To ensure that reading is a positive experience, and to help your child learn much quicker, you need to make reading fun. When you are reading to your child, read with expression, become animated, make sound effects, show them pictures etc. Your child will learn to associate reading with enjoyment.

To develop your child's reading further, it can help to regularly take them to the library. Ask your librarian to recommend books that your child will enjoy. This is another chance for your child to find books they really love to read. Again, set a good example by allowing your child to see you reading. Invite them to chose a book of their own and sit beside you while you read.

If you follow these tips, you can teach your child to enjoy reading. If your child loves to read, this spells guaranteed success for their early literacy. Furthermore, you might help them discover what they are truly passionate about.
